Mount Abu – Living in the clouds

“Mount Abu is a place where clouds strike your face”. I used to hear this line and a lot of appreciation from my in-laws family about this place specially my husband. So, I was like I have heard a lot now, let’s experience it. I am quite excited to share with you guys the vibe that I felt in this hill station. For my non-Indian readers,Mount Abu is the only hill station in dessert state of India, Rajasthan. The hills are not too high with an elevation of only 1722 meters above sea level.

Stay and Bookings

We searched for the flights first, they were appearing quite costly to us in comparison to the distance we were going to travel. It can be due to our late booking. Moreover, it was long ago that we travelled somewhere distant through a train. So,we chose train travel, booked it through IRCTC. And it was quite fair. Babbar's Den-The Hotel For the stay, we were thinking about choosing a medium condition stay. Not a luxury and not an Oyo. It was a hotel named “Babbar’s Den”. It was approximately 1000 Rs per night per head. A couple owned it and we had a nice conversation on call. Having a good conversation with the owner before visiting creates a good impression in mind about a place. It was a 5-day trip including the journey. We started on Thursday noon. We had our food packed along with the snacks. The daytime was spent mostly watching the outside view and chatting. I remember we are laughing, pronouncing the “on the way” strange village names. The company was good. Somehow the journey was little uncomfortable. You experience the back-and-forth motion in a train in general. But this time it was at a higher extent due to which anyone could hardly sleep the whole night. Although the excitement of travel helped to overcome the comfort thing.

First Day Itinerary

Next morning we started spotting mountains although not very high across the railway line. Due to the rainy season, nature’s beauty was at its peak. Everything was so green. The next thing I remember we were on the Abu Road. Mount Abu was at a distance from the railway station. The whole road was lush green. It was curved and on one side there were mountains just like any other hill station. But the unique part is  there were clouds traveling with you . It just felt like we are in clouds. As we reach our hotel after a 1-hour trip on a cab, we were tired from the travel. So, we had some sleep and went for some food. As we had not eaten anything this morning. We first went to that famous Arbuda restaurant where most of us had dosas( South-Indian cuisine). Arbuda Restaurant After that we went to visit Nakki Lake which was at a walking distance from the hotel. There is a park at  the entry. But as we entered, it was crowded a lot. Considering the corona situation and in need of some space, we immediately left after clicking some pictures. Walking around the lake,we found some benches to sit far away from the main park. It was peaceful watching the boats running in the lake. I think we spent an hour there. Then again, we headed towards the lake and went straight to the restaurant in the mid of the lake.Firstly, it was at an awesome location, secondly it was almost empty because cost was a bit higher in comparison to the surroundings. Almost every one of us had some coffee with some snacks. The two men among us were so happy enjoying the scintillating sunset and capturing it. It is the perfect place to watch the shades of the sky as the sun sets. I think we spent two hours more there enjoying the scenery and the lake vibe. There were clouds floating but it was not raining that day. During sunset, the entire atmosphere was a blend of yellow, orange and red. Everything was orange. Lake Restaurant It was eye-catching. Also, this trip was planned to relax more and not about covering the destinations. As you will exit the park area, there are beautiful street shops. Me and sister were so excited visiting those shops that we were not even feeling tired from the journey at all. But the men were getting irritated. So, we went for the hotel and kept shopping for some other day.

Second Day Itinerary

The next day we thought of going to the famous Dilwara mandir, Gurushikhar and some other famous spots. For that, we would need to hire a cab as it was one hour away. We had planned this to enjoy the sunrise at those spots. But we wake up at 11am. So we missed the sunrise shots and somehow, we ended up going to the Lake again. We had breakfast every day at the hotel only. We normally prefer booking a hotel including the breakfast as it is otherwise missed or late. They had a good menu including sandwiches, omelets, toast, tea and coffee. Today we thought of going to the little trek of Toad Road. This was a place near to Nakki Lake but elevated. We were walking a little then staying there and enjoying the beauty of nature. It was a stairs-based trek, and I don’t know why I found them so beautiful. I remember the older me who was not fascinated by the little things or the beauty of nature. That staircase was whole covered with moss and grass due to rainy weather. We found a wall nearby, whole green due to moss growth. And believe me the photographs we took were amazing there. Stair-Trek Then after some distance there were some big rocks where people in groups were enjoying the food. We took some good shots there and enjoyed our snacks. Then walked again to an open area which itself was a rock big enough to accommodate 50 people. I kept sitting there and enjoying the scenery. There was a big mountain in front where clouds keep floating. We could watch the lake below us from there. There was music playing. Then came a cute dog and he immediately was the attention-seeker there. After sitting for 2 hours, we finally came and again went to Arbuda for some food. It was 4pm till we finished, we decided to go to the hotel. It was  little tiring, and we were thinking of having some rest to come for shopping again. View of Nakki Lake from Toad Rock Toad Rock

Shopping

Firstly we went to an Antique store where there were beautiful handicrafts and almost everything at one place.  We thought of buying dohar (a comforter) but the colors were light there. And we found that store little costly. Also we wanted to explore the streets and bought some interesting  stuff like Rajasthani footwear, clothes and bags. The street food there was very good -chickpeas salad , sweet potatoes you can find them everywhere. After that we reached our hotel and enjoyed the balcony view .There were pine trees around. It was little rainy, amazing weather. We sat there playing our favorite songs and chatting.

Third Day Itinerary

Then came the last day. This time we again thought of going on the cab and completing the destinations. We  felt like more like  spending time near the lake only. Yes, you must have  realize by now that this time we are too lazy. But guys travel can be relaxing also, I mean this is the main purpose. Still, we thought of exploring something nearby. Up to this we were only on one side of the lake. So, we decided to visit the opposite side of the lake. There were two spots -suicide point and sunset point near to each other ,close to the Peace Park. We started walking and found a beautiful random garden on our journey. We stayed there for a while, there were beautiful flowers all around and a gorgeous hut shaped restaurant just like in movies. Continuous walking we found a Maggie shop on the way. We had some and it was quite spicy. Although we mentioned not to put any chili, but remember  Rajasthani’s can’t avoid chili. The seller keep on asking me  “you don’t eat spice at all”. It was difficult for him to digest. Nakki Lake Garden The suicide point and the sunset point were mountain peaks as indicated from their names and the views were amazing. The way was like we were in a jungle. We enjoyed walking in the greens. After visiting both the spots , I felt hungry because I could not full my stomach with that spicy Maggie. So, we thought of having a pizza from Dominos. Then we also had our coffee in the same lake restaurant and an ice-cream from Baskin robins. I don’t know why I bought that blue flavor. Sunset point On the way back to our hotel we finally bought two dohar (comforter) from a shop in the market area. They were quite comfy. You can watch our shopping in the attached video. After returning to the hotel, I felt my health deteriorating. I had some headache and the acidity. And then it all started, yes the worst part. My whole night was spent near the washroom vomiting till I finally felt light. There came some fever along with it. And the next morning was exhausting. The fever accompanied with the headache, dizziness. I could not eat properly on our way back. And slept in the waiting room on the railway station first time in my life for two hours. The journey was difficult both-way. But felt good after reaching home. This is the beauty of travel that the discomfort creates a love for home and that coziness.
