Know about Hosting and Domain Name

I developed this blog only by learning from the internet. And guys it is not a difficult process. But yes it need some amount of learning of the basic website terms. So I thought of creating a space where I will share the things that I learned during this journey and the options I choose while developing my website. This can be very helpful if you are thinking about creating your own blog. And trust me I was looking for such a space while browsing through the internet. Also my journey of learning this stuff has not ended yet, this blog is still in developing stage. I still research whenever I need to add some more functionality. So let’s start knowing about Hosting and Domain Name.

If you have ever searched about creating a website or a blog, the first thing that comes into play is hosting.

“What exactly is Hosting”

Suppose you have a wedding in the family and you hire a wedding planner.This person will do all the arrangements for you depending on your interests and you do not need to do the physical work involved.They have everything setup.

You must have seen the websites on the internet ,they have a lot of stuff behind. They need a storage space to store the content just like your phone photos, a database to manage the data etc. So you can think of hosting in computer field like when you do not want to purchase the computer equipment ,hardware or software by yourself and just want to give the contract to the hosting provider.

What is Domain Name

It is just an identity on the internet.Just like every person in India has an Aadhar number or a person in USA has a SSN number.A website has a domain name and no two websites on the internet can have the same domain name.It should be unique.

Hosting providers

Here I am not telling you the names of the hosting providers like the other websites.I am sharing how I choose hosting provider for this blog. First of all I choose wordpress as the platform of the blog because it is the first word that appear in searches when you type “how to create a blog” in your browser.

But when I learned more about it ,I got to know that it is the simplest and the most extensible one in the market.For more understanding, the most popular software we use for text editing is Microsoft word.So for creating a website you will use the software named WordPress. With free basic plugins, you can make your website functional. I am not saying that it would be the best one. WordPress is free but it need separate hosting while its competitor Wix has its hosting included. But as a Wix user , you have to use their domain name at the end of your website name in the basic plan.

I choose WordPress with separate hosting from Hostinger. As it was recommended by a lot of people on the internet.Then if we talk about the plan I choose, it was their premium WordPress one with the details in the below picture .

Let’s discuss more about this plan :-

1.100 Websites

I do not need 100 websites for me but this hosting plan was providing me this feature. All of these 100 websites will have the same domain name at the end.I will not recommend considering this option as a deciding factor. Because your domain name should match the website you are creating I believe .Suppose you have a cooking website along with the cooking domain name .Does it make sense to use that cooking domain name with the travel website.But I was ok with this option included anyway I was not going to create this many websites.I was happy with the one only.

2.100 Email accounts

Again this was not my cup of tea as I do not need so much mail accounts but no problem it comes as an extra benefit.Whenever I will feel the need to expand my website or need a team to manage it in the future, this can come handy.

3.20GB Disk space

I know like 20GB is a very limited disk space for a website that is growing at a faster rate.But initially I was not sure that I would be able to write blogs.So I decided to go with the minimal option.You can upgrade whenever you want.

4.Unlimited bandwidth

You can relate to the bandwidth as the traffic on a road.In the case of a website, it usually refers to the traffic of the users.So in comparison to the first option in the screenshot”single wordpress”,this plan was giving unlimited bandwidth like if the traffic has an abrupt increase, there would not be any slowness.

5.Free SSL and Domain

Again the first option was not giving me free domain name, this is the other reason to choose this option. Domain registration is charged in many other hosting providers.

A SSL certificate is necessary to make your website secure as identity is verified whenever a request is made.Also you will see when you go for monetization, website with the SSL certificate will have added advantage. You will thank me later.

6.Managed WordPress

The reason I was creating my website was not to learn the technology behind but to start writing.In managed wordpress option, the servers (in most basic terms-big computers where the website resides) ,the backup of the website is all managed by hosting provider.So this is a major deciding factor.

7.Jetpack Free

It is a wordpress plugin that comes in its most basic version in this hosting plan. It helps in providing security, backup ,performance and marketing of the blog website .But guys, the basic version provide a very limited number of features ,even I am thinking to migrate to the premium jetpack recently. This was the most affordable option at that time because it can provide me all the features at a minimal price.
